Obama against Kootenay coalmine

Senator supports Montana’s stance

U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama wants to halt a proposed coalmine in B.C.’s East Kootenays.

Obama, an Illinois senator who is running for the Democratic Party presidential nomination, supports efforts by Montana’s governor and two senators to stop the proposed mine for environmental reasons.

The mine, located east of Fernie, B.C., near a tributary of the Flathead River, projects a yield of two million tonnes of coal annually for 20 years.

"Barak Obama supports efforts by Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester as well as Governor Brian Schweitzer to stop the Cline Mine," Matthew Chandler, of Obama’s Montana press office, said in an e-mail to a local conservation association.

"The Flathead River and Glacier National Park are treasures that should be conserved for future generations."
